SUBCLASS 189
The skilled permanent residence migration program comprises two points-tested visa paths which entitle a successful applicant to full Australian permanent residence.
The subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an Australian employer, family member or nominated by a state or territory. Applicants must obtain a minimum of 65 points on the point assessment to be eligible to apply for the subclass 189 visa.
The subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa is a points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian State or Territory government. Applicants must also obtain a minimum of 65 points, including 5 state nomination point, to apply for a subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa and must be nominated by a participating State or Territory government in Australia.
You do not need to satisfy all the criteria, but you must score at least 65 points or above at the time you lodge your Expression of Interest.
While there are some other ways to increase points the criteria below are the primary point attributors for overseas applicants:
Age
English language skills
Skilled employment experience – (outside Australia)
You can only claim points for employment if the employment was in your nominated skilled occupation or a closely related skilled occupation; and you were employed at least 20 hours a week for the relevant periods set out in the table, and in the 10 years before you are invited to apply.
Educational qualifications
The authority undertaking your skills assessment may determine if your qualifications are comparable to the relevant Australian qualification. You must have obtained this recognition at the time you are invited to apply for a visa.
Partner / Single
Your spouse or de facto partner can either add 5 or 10 pints towards your application if they write the English test and obtain a competent level and / or have a suitable skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for their nominated skilled occupation,
If you are single or your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident can obtain an additional 10 points towards your application

SUBCLASS 491
Australia has recently introduced a new visa path as the Federal Government aims to settle more skilled migrants in regional areas.
This temporary visa known as Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) was made available from 16 November 2019. It is also point-based visa where an applicant requires a minimum score of 65 points and a state nomination. However, in this case the applicant will receive an additional 15 state nomination points giving the applicant a far greater chance of success.
This is a temporary visa which is available for eligible skilled workers and their families to live, work and study in regional Australia for 5 years and it can set a pathway for permanent residence for eligible applicants
The visa holders will need to stay and fulfil work requirements in a regional area for 3 years before being able to apply for a 191 visa leading to permanent residency.

SUBCLASS 491
Eligible relatives living in a designated regional area of Australia can provide family sponsorship of a Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491).
The relative sponsored 491 visa is slightly more straightforward than the state sponsored option, as no additional criteria from the state applies but as with state nominated stream, the applicant requires at least 65 points and must pass a skills assessment of their chosen occupation.
For the purposes of family sponsorship, designated regional areas comprise of the entirety of Australia except for Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane.
Family that live on the outskirts of these major Cities may still be eligible sponsor you if they live in the correct postcode. To be eligible to sponsor you your relative must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
The following listed relatives are recognised as an eligible relative for the purposes of family sponsorship for a provisional skilled visa.
The relative in Australia can be related either to the main applicant or their accompanying partner.
